After the broadcast was sent out, Maggie showed up in her office. Maggie sat across from Dana, her hands clasped in her lap and her leg bouncing as if she were ready to bolt for the washroom. She wore the same brown dress with the large white dotted pattern she’d worn for the broadcast. Dana saw from the red rimming her eyes that she’d been crying. The make-up hid most of her distress well enough, but she’d seen Maggie up close too many times to miss the tell-tale signs of it.

Dana pushed the newest batch of reports aside and turned to face her.

“You reviewed my broadcast,” Maggie said abruptly.

It wasn’t a question, and Dana thought she heard the hint of annoyance in her voice. Maggie would, of course, be ruffled by the idea of having anyone seeing the broadcast ahead of time, but in this case it was necessary. Dana did, in general, like most of Maggie’s broadcasts, but she wasn’t about to admit to it now.

“I did, and I appreciated your spin on both stories. You kept to the relevant facts about what happened with the Fashin Teku. You’ve made my job a little bit easier in the sense that I don’t have to explain why we’re going after them. Eartha’s introduction to the rest of the passengers and crew was also tastefully done.”

Maggie lifted a shoulder. “I do have some diplomatic experience.”

Dana thought it was an interesting word choice. It took some level of diplomacy to ease tensions between people, and there would certainly be tension on board now that Eartha was out in the open and they were hunting down pirates.

“I remember.” She leaned back in her chair. “You got far more footage of the Fashin Teku’s ship than I imagined.”

“Anything to further our mission to find a new home.” Maggie bit her lower lip, as if in that moment trying to determine if there was something more she could have done. “I had thought to get something more valuable, like details on how to incorporate their technology, but—”

“You got enough. So, tell me why you’re really here. It’s not to talk about your broadcast.” Dana purposefully left out mentioning her red-rimmed eyes.

Maggie shifted in her chair again. “I’m here to discuss my future on the Hope.”

Dana raised an eyebrow at her. “Oh?”

“Yes. I would like to discuss future planetary missions, and also a seat on the bridge.”

Dana made a soft sound of surprise. “Whatever makes you think you belong on the bridge?”

“Other than my accurate reporting, I believe my diplomatic skills may be an asset.”

“We already have diplomats on board,” Dana countered, even though the thought of the chancellor made her purse her lips in annoyance. The last thing she needed was someone else on the bridge who didn’t know protocol or procedure. The thought of it set her teeth on edge.

Maggie straightened up, pulling her shoulders back and lifting her chin. “Not the kind that can carry a hidden camera and adapt to whatever customs or language they use.
